9. What is an SIC Code?
The four digit codes assigned by the United States government to business organizations in order to classify the primary business are called Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. The purpose of the development of this classification was to smoothen the progress of the gathering, presentation and analysis of data; and to uphold uniformity and comparability in the presentation of statistical data collected by different agencies of the federal government, state agencies and private organizations. The economic activities covered under the classification are public administration; manufacturing; transportation; agriculture; fishing; mining; forestry; hunting & trapping; construction; electric, gas and sanitary services; wholesale trade; retail trade; insurance and real estate; personal, business, professional, repair, recreation and other services.
10. How to read an SIC Code?
Out of the first four digits on the code, the first 2 digits represent the main industry group, the 3rd digit represents the industry group and the 4th digit represents the industry. For example:
- 36 ELECTRONIC & OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
- 367 ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS & ACCESSORIES
- 3672 PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS
Please Note:
To designate miscellaneous industries not elsewhere classified (NEC) the digit "9" is used in the third or fourth digit position of the classification code. These diverse classifications are not consisting of homogenous primary activity groups. They are assembled and treated as a separate industry so that the homogeneity of the other industries in the group can be retained.
